The hotel was a chilled-out base for enjoying a beautiful area, adjacent to the center of Matsumoto, ShinShimashima train station and Kamikochi and other mountain resorts. The staff was very-very nice, we had an easy check-in. Marvellous position was an added bonus. Besides, it was 3 miles away from Tamura-do Temple.
Tbh, rooms were musty.

The hotel's decoration was cozy and had a charming traditional Japanese style. The common areas were well-maintained and provided a comfortable atmosphere for relaxation. As a senior woman, I found the hotel to be easily accessible with no steep stairs or obstacles that would make it difficult for me to navigate.
It would have been even better if the children working there could have provided some assistance or guidance specifically tailored for senior guests.

I absolutely adored the traditional Japanese decor at the hotel. The beautiful tatami mat floors and sliding doors made me feel like I was truly experiencing the local culture. The common areas were so cozy and inviting, perfect for relaxing and socializing with other guests. Additionally, the hotel's close proximity to the bus stop and train station made it extremely accessible for senior people like myself. I didn't have to walk far to catch transportation or visit the nearby convenience store.
It would have been wonderful if there were more activities or amenities specifically tailored for senior people. A gentle reminder to the children working there to be considerate of noise levels during the night would have ensured a better night's sleep for all.

the staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making us feel right at home. the traditional Japanese style of the hostel added to the warm and cozy atmosphere. We were fortunate to have a room to ourselves as there were only a few guests at the time. the hostel's proximity to the train station and bus terminal made getting around a breeze. Plus, having a convenience store right next door was convenient, although they didn't have much food left in the evening. the lounge area was a great place to socialize with other guests and the staff. If you're looking for a traditional Japanese experience and easy access to Kamikochi, this is the perfect place to stay!
Everything was great! 😊.

The host greeted us with a huge smile and made us feel truly welcome. The charming and thoughtfully designed guesthouse had clean and relaxing common areas. The comfortable beds and conveniently located shared bathroom made us feel at home. The set menu dinner at the restaurant was fresh and delicious. We were pleasantly surprised to find the bus/train station just 200 meters away, perfect for exploring Kamikochi Park. The guesthouse may be rated 1 star, but it definitely deserves a shiny gold star for its outstanding experience. Well done!

Great location - just a short walk from the coach and rail station. Convenient for exploring nearby attractions like Kamikochi, Takayama, and Matsumoto. Plus, there's a 7/11 and fruit and veg market nearby for any immediate needs.
Noisy road - unfortunately, the guesthouse is located right next to a busy road and the traffic noise was constant. It's advisable to bring earplugs or request a room at the back to minimize the disturbance.

Friendly staff, giving helpful tips for hiking and even offering local taste tests like umeshu and nihonshu. Traditional, cozy feel with clean rooms and comfortable futons. - Convenient location, just a two-minute walk to the station and close to Kamikochi for mountain exploration. - 7-11 shop next door for supplies and great soba noodles nearby for dinner.
Felt like royalty, no complaints at all.

The traditional Japanese decor at Guesthouse Shimashima was absolutely charming and made me feel like I was truly experiencing the local culture. The beautiful tatami mats and sliding doors added a special touch to the ambiance. , the spacious common areas were perfect for relaxing and socializing with other guests. As a senior woman, I appreciated how accessible the hotel was, with conveniently placed handrails and ramps to assist with mobility.
The only thing I would ask for a better vacation experience for senior people is if the staff could provide more assistance with luggage handling. Although the children working there were polite, I could have used a helping hand with my heavy suitcase.

The guestrooms at Guesthouse Shimashima are cozy and welcoming, making you feel right at home. I loved having a refrigerator and microwave in the room, perfect for storing and heating up snacks. The shared bathrooms are clean and have bidets, which is a nice touch.
The only downside for me was the shared open-air bath and shower room. It's not my thing, but I'm sure others would enjoy the experience.
